Two residents of Chico tragically died Tuesday evening following a catastrophic head-on collision on State Route 99, located just south of Howsley Road within Sutter County. The Sutter County Sheriff-Coroner’s office officially identified the two victims as 45-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez Maldonado and 42-year-old Maria Cristina Alarcon-Abarca. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The severe crash involved two vehicles and resulted in significant injuries to two other individuals. A rear passenger in one of the vehicles sustained major injuries and required immediate transport by air ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center for urgent medical care. Additionally, the driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, as reported by the Yuba-Sutter California Highway Patrol.
The initial emergency call reporting the incident was received at approximately 5:27 p.m. A preliminary investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol has provided details regarding the sequence of events. According to these findings, a white Toyota Corolla was reportedly traveling southbound on State Route 99 when it unexpectedly deviated from its lane. The Corolla proceeded to cross all southbound lanes of traffic and then traversed a dirt median before colliding head-on with a Volvo XC60. The Volvo was traveling northbound in the fast lane at the time of the impact. The Toyota, which was occupied by Mr. Maldonado and Ms. Alarcon-Abarca, subsequently overturned during the collision and ultimately came to rest down an embankment beside the highway.
In the aftermath of the crash, northbound State Route 99 was completely shut down to traffic for an estimated period of about an-hour-and-a-half. CHP Sgt. J.D. McIntosh confirmed that this crucial section of the highway remained closed to ensure safety and facilitate emergency response, specifically from approximately 5:50 p.m. until 7:15 p.m.
A coordinated response involved multiple public safety agencies from across the region. According to information provided by CHP Sgt. J.D. McIntosh, personnel from the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, Sutter County Fire, Pleasant Grove Fire, and Bi-County Ambulance all responded to the accident scene to assist the California Highway Patrol. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office played a specific role in supporting the CHP's efforts by assisting with traffic control around the incident site, a detail confirmed by SCSO Public Information Officer Sierra Pedley.
As of now, the precise cause of the collision remains under active investigation by law enforcement authorities. CHP officers have stated that it is currently unknown whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the crash. The overall circumstances leading to this tragic event are still being thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
