Editorial Standards — Our Principles
What we stand for
Sharp writing. Every headline is worked on and every paragraph earns its place. Good writing is a craft, not a shortcut.
Editorial integrity. We label what we publish accurately, and we never mislead a reader about what they are reading. A reader should always be able to tell what kind of piece is in front of them.
Writing with purpose. A piece should carry an idea worth the space — something noticed, something worth saying, something that leaves the reader better informed or better entertained than they were.
Accountability. No institution is too large to be examined honestly, and that includes us.
How the work gets made
Watch. We follow the news and the sources our subjects come from, every day.
Work it. A story becomes a published piece through research, drafting and revision — never by relabelling someone else's headline.
Review. Pieces are read before they publish, and corrections are made openly when they are needed.
Where the line is
We examine power, institutions and public conduct. That is not a cover for harassment of private individuals, and it is not a route to publishing something we know to be false as though it were established fact.
Corrections
If we have got something wrong, tell us through the contact page on this site and we will review it. Corrections that matter are made visibly rather than quietly.
