Michael Charles Wheeler, a prominent Yuba City businessman admired for his selfless acts and philanthropic efforts, passed away recently, a little over a month ago, after experiencing a heart attack on July 22. His deep roots in the community spanned five decades dedicated to the family’s automobile business and extensive involvement in local organizations and youth sports. A celebration of life is scheduled for October 11.
Mr. Wheeler was the general manager, president, and chief executive officer of Wheeler Automotive, a family business established in Yuba City in 1960 by his father, David W. Wheeler. His son, Cole Wheeler, now runs the dealership, continuing the legacy his father dedicated himself to after returning to Yuba City in 1973. Cole Wheeler emphasized his father’s commitment to operating the business with integrity, always aiming to do what was right for the customer and pricing competitively. Michael Wheeler was also passionate about promoting local commerce within the Yuba-Sutter community.
Beyond his business, Michael Wheeler was an ardent supporter of youth sports in the community. He was an early member and served as president of the Yuba-Sutter Youth Soccer League from 1986 to 1987. He played a pivotal role in the development of soccer fields at Beckwourth Riverfront Park, which are now known as the Wheeler Auto Center Soccer Complex, a project he sponsored for 40 years. He further coached the area’s first competitive soccer team, “The Bears,” for 25 seasons. His involvement extended to his own children's sports activities and teams, which he often coached.
Mr. Wheeler was also a significant figure in the local banking sector. In 1975, he was a founding member of California Independent Bancorp and Feather River State Bank, serving on both boards of directors until 2004. In 2006, he became a founding member of River Valley Community Bank, remaining on its board until his passing. John M. Jelavich, President and Chief Executive Officer of River Valley Community Bank, described Mr. Wheeler as a “trusted advisor, a wise counselor, and friend,” noting his thoughtful perspective grounded in what was best for customers, shareholders, employees, and the community.
His widespread contributions were evident through numerous certificates of appreciation displayed at the dealership from organizations such as Sutter Buttes Little League, Yuba City Unified School District, Gray Avenue Middle School, VFW Post 4095, the Marysville Bok Kai Parade, Fairway to Health, the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce, the Alzheimer’s Association (Walk to End Alzheimer’s), Butte Vista Parent Club, and the American Cancer Club. Elicia Stewart of Walk to End Alzheimer’s recognized the Wheeler Family as dedicated supporters and top sponsors, with the organization making a special presentation in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the Wheeler family requested donations be made to the local Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Sutter County Supervisor Dan Flores honored Michael Wheeler at the September 8 meeting, citing an impressive account of his accomplishments and noting that he “put his family and his friends before everything else.” Cole Wheeler reflected on his father's athletic nature, competitive spirit, and consistent schedule, mentioning his dedication to crossfit, the racquet club, and spin classes. Michael Wheeler, born on September 18, 1949, in San Francisco, graduated from Yuba City High School, where he played basketball. He pursued higher education at UC Berkeley and then Stanford University, earning a BA in economics and an MBA while playing lacrosse, before dedicating his life to the family business and his community.
Michael Wheeler’s family stated he was a very humble person who preferred his actions to speak louder than words. Cole Wheeler aspires to continue his father’s traditions of community involvement and ethical business practices. A celebration of life for Michael Wheeler is scheduled for October 11.
