Yuba College mathematics professor Erika Noffsinger has received the 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award from the California Mathematics Council of Community Colleges, announced on April 10, 2026. The award recognizes outstanding mathematics educators statewide for their dedication to student success, innovative teaching methods, and contributions to their departments and institutions. Noffsinger, who teaches in Marysville, expressed surprise and honor at the recognition.
Dr. Michael Bagley, dean of industrial innovation, business, science and math pathways at Yuba College, stated that the award reflects Noffsinger's "unwavering commitment to student success" and her innovative, student-centered approach. Dr. Samantha Dana, vice president of instruction at Yuba College, added that Professor Noffsinger’s award highlights her impact not only on Yuba College students but also on improving teaching and learning for all students within the math faculty. Dana noted that generations of students in the Yuba-Sutter region have benefited and will continue to benefit from her work.
With over 30 years of experience in mathematics education, Noffsinger has developed a teaching approach focused on engagement, connection, and student understanding. She has shifted from traditional lecture styles to more interactive classrooms, incorporating group work, discussions, and hands-on activities. Noffsinger emphasizes building connections with students to foster comfort and support, which she believes significantly aids their learning process and success. Her method focuses on helping students truly understand concepts rather than just memorizing procedures, encouraging them to feel comfortable making and learning from mistakes. She credits her students for shaping her teaching, recognizing their resilience and the importance of patience and encouragement.
Beyond her classroom, Noffsinger established Yuba College’s Mathematics Teaching Community. This group strengthens collaboration among faculty, providing a platform for instructors to share ideas and adapt to significant changes in mathematics education, including statewide legislation like AB 705 and AB 1705, which altered how students are placed and supported in college-level math courses. Noffsinger saw the value in creating this space for faculty to support one another and respond to evolving challenges and student needs. She credits her colleagues’ dedication and openness for the community's success. Noffsinger stated that watching a student gain confidence or have a breakthrough moment never gets old, aiming for students to achieve more than they might believe possible.
Yuba College, located at 2088 North Beale Rd. in Marysville, has served the Yuba-Sutter area for over 98 years, since opening in 1927. The institution offers more than 90 programs to over 10,000 students annually, preparing them for certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to four-year colleges.
