Yuba College mathematics professor Erika Noffsinger received the 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award from the California Mathematics Council of Community Colleges on April 10, 2026, in Marysville. This statewide recognition highlights her commitment to student success, innovative teaching, and contributions to her department and institution.
Dr. Michael Bagley, dean of industrial innovation, business, science and math pathways at Yuba College, stated that the award reflects Ms. Noffsinger's "unwavering commitment to student success" and her student-centered approach. Dr. Samantha Dana, vice president of instruction at Yuba College, added that Ms. Noffsinger's work benefits not only Yuba College students but also the broader Yuba-Sutter region by improving teaching and learning for all math faculty.
Ms. Noffsinger, who has more than 30 years of experience in mathematics education, expressed surprise and honor, finding the recognition from colleagues especially meaningful. Her teaching approach has evolved from traditional lectures to an interactive classroom environment that includes group work, discussion, and hands-on activities. She focuses on building connections with students to foster comfort and engagement, aiming for true understanding of concepts rather than mere memorization. Ms. Noffsinger emphasizes creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. She credits her students for shaping her methods, noting their resilience and the importance of patience and encouragement.
Beyond her classroom, Ms. Noffsinger established Yuba College’s Mathematics Teaching Community. This group provides a space for instructors to collaborate, share ideas, and adapt to significant changes in mathematics education. The community has specifically helped faculty respond to statewide legislation, such as AB 705 and AB 1705, which altered how students are placed into and supported in college-level math courses. Ms. Noffsinger noted that this community has been vital for meaningful conversations about teaching and effectively reaching students from diverse backgrounds, crediting her colleagues' dedication and openness for its success. She continues to be driven by the visible impact on her students, watching them gain confidence and achieve breakthroughs.
Yuba College, located at 2088 North Beale Rd. in Marysville, has served the Yuba-Sutter area for over 98 years since its opening in 1927. The 180-acre campus offers more than 90 programs, preparing over 10,000 enrolled students for certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to four-year institutions. The college also operates the Sutter County Center and is part of a two-college district spanning 4,192 square miles across parts of eight counties. Ms. Noffsinger’s work within the college is expected to continue benefiting generations of students in the region.
