Yuba College counselor Rupy Bajwa has been recognized with the Yuba College Employee Excellence Awards Kelly Boren Excellence in Equity Award for her sustained commitment to student success and creating equitable opportunities. Bajwa, who serves as both an English as a Second Language counselor and a general counselor, supports a diverse student body, including high school students, recent graduates, transfer students, English language learners, and individuals relocating from other regions or countries. Many of these students are the first in their families to pursue higher education.
The award specifically honors individuals who consistently go above and beyond to foster equity and create pathways for all students. Through one-on-one meetings, Bajwa assists students in defining their academic and career aspirations, developing comprehensive education plans, and connecting with essential resources tailored to their needs. She states that her work centers on helping students "find their path and feel like they belong in college."
Bajwa's approach is deeply influenced by her upbringing and the examples set by her parents regarding equity and fairness, alongside the inspiration from role models such as Valerie Harris, Kelly Boren, Leticia Gomez, and Neena Gill. Her dedication is primarily driven by the students she serves, many of whom navigate significant responsibilities including work, family, and language barriers, alongside the inherent uncertainties of college life. She expressed that receiving the award was both humbling and unexpected, affirming the value of her daily efforts.
While committed, Bajwa acknowledges challenges in her role, particularly in addressing a wide spectrum of student needs amidst limited time, staffing, and systemic barriers. To overcome these, she emphasizes flexibility, attentive listening, and the implementation of practical, student-centered solutions. She also collaborates with campus and community partners to alleviate obstacles whenever possible.
The most rewarding aspects of her work come from observing students realize their potential and grow in confidence. Bajwa finds inspiration in witnessing students make progress, even through small steps like enrolling, returning after a break, or simply gaining assurance in the educational process. This work, she notes, holds the power to change their trajectory. Bajwa also credits her team and colleagues for fostering a supportive and collaborative environment that enables their shared commitment to students. She plans to continue her work, assisting many more students in the years ahead.
