Rupy Bajwa, a dedicated counselor at Yuba College, has been recognized with the Kelly Boren Excellence in Equity Award. This honor, part of the Yuba College Employee Excellence Awards, highlights individuals who significantly support equity and create opportunities for all students. Bajwa was selected for her unwavering commitment to helping students navigate their academic journeys and fostering a vital sense of belonging on campus.
In her dual role as an English as a Second Language counselor and a general counselor, Bajwa supports a diverse population of students. This includes high school students, recent graduates, transfer students, English language learners, and individuals who have relocated from other states or countries. Many of these students are the first in their families to attend college. Through personalized one-on-one meetings, she assists students in outlining their academic and career goals, developing comprehensive education plans, and connecting them with the essential resources needed for their success.
Her approach is rooted in ensuring that college, which can often feel overwhelming and uncertain at the outset, becomes a welcoming and achievable path. Bajwa stated that her work "really centers around helping students find their path." Her efforts have created safe and supportive spaces, making a lasting impact across the Yuba College campus.
Bajwa described receiving the award as humbling and unexpected, confirming her belief that she was doing the right thing. Her dedication is deeply influenced by her personal values and the examples set by her parents, who led by example in advocating for equity and fairness. She also credits strong role models such as Valerie Harris, Kelly Boren, Leticia Gomez, and Neena Gill for inspiring her work and building a foundational commitment to student support.
The core of her commitment is driven by the students she serves. She recognizes that many students balance numerous responsibilities—including work, family obligations, and language barriers—while striving to stay on their academic path. Bajwa acknowledged that this understanding provides insight into the challenges of her role, specifically "supporting the wide range of student needs while working within limited time, staffing and systemic barriers."
To address these complexities, Bajwa employs a strategy focused on flexibility, careful listening, and practical, student-centered solutions. She collaborates with campus and community partners to reduce obstacles whenever possible. Despite these challenges, she finds the most meaningful moments in witnessing students begin to recognize their full potential. She noted that "watching students gain confidence and realize they belong in college" is a key reward.
Observing students make progress, even in small increments—such as enrolling, returning after a break, or gaining confidence in the process—is what keeps her inspired. These steps, she believes, can significantly alter a student's trajectory. She also highlights the supportive environment fostered by her colleagues, describing them as a team of positive individuals genuinely committed to students, which makes the day-to-day work smoother and enjoyable.
Rupy Bajwa's work extends beyond routine counseling, focusing on creating an environment where students feel acknowledged, supported, and capable of achieving their goals. For many students navigating unfamiliar educational systems, balancing multiple demands, and questioning their place in college, her guidance and encouragement are invaluable. Through every conversation, educational plan, and moment of support, she empowers students to move forward with confidence. Bajwa will continue to help many more students at Yuba College for years to come.
