Quy Bui, who has supported students at Yuba College for more than 20 years, has been named the institution’s Classified Employee of the Year. Bui, who joined Yuba College in 2004, currently serves as an Instructional Associate in Mathematics within the College Success Center.
In her role, Bui assists students in navigating mathematical challenges, connects them with essential tutoring services, and supports their learning daily. Her work primarily focuses on ensuring students feel comfortable seeking assistance and capable of progressing with a clear sense of direction in their studies. Over her extensive tenure, Bui has significantly impacted countless students across the campus, an achievement now formally recognized by this award. For Bui, the honor reflects not only her daily efforts but also the many years she has committed to helping students succeed.
Bui stated, “Receiving this award means a great deal to me.” She expressed personal thankfulness and honor, adding that professionally, the award “shows that my work is appreciated.” The recognition came as a surprise to Bui, who indicated she “did not expect this recognition” after more than two decades at the college. She noted that the honor holds significant meaning and makes her feel she has “made a difference in the lives of students.”
Witnessing students overcome work they once found difficult is particularly rewarding for Bui. She shared that her favorite aspect of her job is observing students' dedication and improvement, explaining that a student’s understanding after diligent effort makes her “very proud and happy,” reinforcing her purpose. Bui manages the daily challenge of assisting many students with diverse needs by employing patience, organization, and flexibility, carefully listening to ensure each student receives appropriate help.
Her motivation stems from a deep understanding of the value of education and a strong desire to help students thrive in college, especially those confronting various life challenges. Bui’s commitment is deeply rooted in her personal journey; she immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in 1993 without knowing English and enrolled at Yuba College that same year. Through the support of students, staff, and faculty, she achieved her educational goals, an experience she now passes on. She views Yuba College as her “second family in this country” and considers it a “privilege to give back” to the community that once supported her.
