The Yuba-Sutter Flash Film Festival will showcase a collection of short films created under a tight 48-hour deadline this Saturday, September 26, at the Sutter Theater Center for the Arts in Yuba City. The event, organized by Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture, will feature screenings of new films and an award ceremony recognizing local talent. Doors for the event, located at 754 Plumas Street, will open at 3 p.m., with the screening and awards commencing at 4 p.m.
The festival challenged participating teams to develop an idea into a finished film within a single weekend. Each team received a random drawing that assigned them a specific theme, an object, and a line of dialogue from a famous film, all of which had to be incorporated into their production. From these core elements, filmmakers were responsible for every aspect of their project, including the story, performances, camera work, sound design, and editing, to produce a film lasting between four and six minutes. This intensive process highlights the creativity and technical skill of local filmmakers working under pressure.
This year's festival features eight distinct entries, each representing a unique response to the creative challenge. The films and their creators include Eric Preston with “Tipsey Travelerz,” Cassandra Fifield presenting “The Flatulent Tangerine,” Cullen Halloran with “An Adventures Gilld,” and Genia Moretti's “Forbidden Flame.” Also on the program are Graley Bishop’s “Zombie Apocalypse,” Nathan Schemel’s “College Tour,” Samantha McDougal’s “The Envelope,” and Tristan Alcisto’s “Feist or Heist.”
Yuba Sutter Arts & Culture anticipates that attendees will have the opportunity to observe how various teams approached the stringent deadline and creative constraints. Some films are expected to evoke laughter, while others may surprise or prompt sustained thought among audience members, according to the organizers.
